This industry includes a wide variety of establishments that operate facilities or provides services to meet various cultural, entertainment and recreational needs of their patrons. These establishments are classified in three basic categories: (1) those involved in producing, promoting, or participating in live performances, events or exhibits intended for public viewing; (2) those that preserve and exhibit objects and sites of historical, cultural or educational interest; and (3) those that operate facilities or provide services that enable patrons to participate in recreational activities or pursue amusement, hobby and leisure-time interests.

Excluded from this industry are: establishments that provide accommodations in addition to recreational facilities, restaurants and night clubs whose primary function is the sale of food and beverages, establishments using transportation equipment to provide recreation and entertainment services and establishments involved in the production and presentation of information (see Information industry). Examples include:
