General Summary:  Assigned to job duties ranging from assistant traffic technician to senior traffic studies specialist,  based on level ofeducation and previous work experience.

Examples of Work:

•Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned

•May attend resident engineer and maintenance superintendent meetings and provide work zone feedback.

•Maintains traffic databases such as sign logs,  inventories,  work zone coordination,  traffic project assignments andprogress reports;  processes requisitions for materials.

•Organizes field and office traffic data into traffic study documents;  creates various maps and diagrams in correlationwith traffic concerns.

•Interacts with external and internal customers in order to answer traffic-related questions,  respond to complaints andrequests,  or to discuss traffic control ordinances,  plans,  policies,  and procedures.

•Performs routine monitoring of field traffic devices such as signs,  signals,  and roadway marking,  with limiteddecision-making capabilities;  eliminates traffic control conflicts between adjacent work zones.

•Conducts daytime and nighttime field evaluations of all work zones to determine compliance with standards.

•Performs initial field site reviews by documenting existing conditions using photo logs and video.

•May issue permits;  assists in the review,  preparation,  documentation,  and inspection of permit activities.

•Analyzes accident reports to prepare diagrams that include types and locations of accidents and dates,  times,  andweather conditions.

•Performs and summarizes radar speed surveys to determine the characteristic speeds of motorists or establish aspeed limit that is both safe and comfortable.

•Determines traffic volume on roadways and code data for computer processing,  provides recommendations,  andcoordinates correction of deficiencies.


Minimum/Required Qualifications:  Must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled in a civil engineering program at an accredited college or university,working towards a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (BSCE)  with completion of freshman year (normally 30 semesterhours)  in pre-civil engineering coursework;  or must be an ungraduated student enrolled in a pre-civil engineering programat a college having a transfer agreement with an intent to obtain a BSCE with completion of a freshman year (normally 30semester hours)  in pre-engineering coursework;  and maintain an overall G.P.A.  of 2.0 our of 4.0.

Special Working Conditions/Job Characteristics:  Job requires travel within the district.  There may be times where work hours extend beyond the normal business hoursinto evening or early morning.  Some occasional weekend hours may be required in order to provide a comprehensivereview of traffic patterns at a location.Job requires exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable environment conditions.
