Description

The Construction Intern is assigned to job duties ranging from construction assistant to senior construction technician,  based on level of education and previous work experience.  This position will involve spending a significant amount of time outdoors on an active construction project site working beside MoDOT staff members overseeing contract work.  Working hours will require flexibility to accommodate contractors’  work schedules which may involve evening,  overnight,  and possibly some weekend hours.  This position may also choose to work for one to two weeks in the Materials Division at the Central District office in Jefferson City to enhance their experience in materials inspection and testing.  Positions are available at the MoDOT’s Jefferson City Project Office (1),  the Columbia Project Office (2),  the Osage Beach Project Office (1),  and the St.  James Project Office (2).  Applications must be submitted by February 28 at www.modot.org/careers.

Responsibilities

Performs basic construction tests such as air,  slump,  moisture,  compaction,  aggregate gradation,  and density;  reports results to supervisor.  ·  Assists in inspection of bituminous and portland cement concrete plants and/or grading,  base,  bituminous or concrete paving.  ·  Maintains records and prepares reports pertaining to inspections;  keeps supervisor informed of activities or unusual conditions;  ensures projects meet department standards.  ·  Enters and records information regarding construction projects into computer programs.  ·  Assists on routine layout,  staking,  and surveying of future construction projects;  may operate survey instruments.  ·  Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Must be a college undergraduate currently enrolled in civil engineering at a college accredited toward a Bachelor degree in civil engineering (BSCE)  who has completed their freshman year (normally 30 semester hours)  in pre-civil engineering coursework;  or must be a college undergraduate enrolled in pre-civil engineering at a college having a transfer agreement,  with an intent to obtain a BSCE (normally 30 semester hours)  in pre-civil engineering coursework.  Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.  Job requires moderate physical activity.  Job requires exposure to physical hazards,  health and safety risks,  and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
