Description

This internship will allow the student to gain a comprehensive understanding of MDC career opportunities with a focus on conservation education and engaging with St. Louis region schools. Listed below are intern duties and responsibilities.

  • Works with St. Louis Region Conservation Education team on Department partnership and engagement efforts with schools and communities including integration of Department flagship programs of Discover Nature Schools (DNS), Hunter Education, Discover Nature Fishing (DNF), Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP), and Stream Team with a target goal of 2% growth.
  • Observes, plans, and conducts public programming efforts in the region based on an analysis of customer surveys and trends to ensure positive customer experience; programs to include a variety of topics geared towards conservation awareness and a call to action towards conservation minded activities; offers programs to diverse audiences and a variety of approaches including virtual and in-person options.
  • Attends training; potential training includes:
  1. DNS trainings in various units
  2. MoNASP Basic Archery Instructor
  3. Hunter Education Instructor
  4. DNF Instructor
  • Region-wide opportunities related to career exploration will be provided at the Intern’s interest, including trainings and field days with MDC Branches such as Regional Resource Management or Community and Private Lands.

Qualifications

Students are eligible for the program when they meet the following criteria: 

  • Undergraduate student at an accredited university/college in good standing. Students who will be graduating before the internship begins are not eligible.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on 4.0 scale is desirable.
  • Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 45 credit hours.
  • Pursuing a degree in Fish & Wildlife, Wildlife Conservation, Biology, Natural Resources, Parks & Recreation, Outdoor Education, Interpretation, or related field. A background and/or interest in hunting, fishing, outdoor skills, and other outdoor skills is also desirable.
