Description

Assists with aquatic field sampling on the Missouri River and its tributaries.  Uses benthic trawling, trotlines, gill and fyke nets, acoustic telemetry, and boat-mounted electrofishing, sample fishes within the mainstem Missouri River and select tributaries.  Collects fish tissue for age determination, genetic identification, and fish health sampling.  Identifies river fishes in field and lab settings. Assists Science and Regional Resource Management staff with projects related to protection of aquatic communities, management of sportfish populations, and nuisance or invasive plant and animal species.

Qualifications

  Students are eligible for the program when they meet the following criteria:  

  • Undergraduate student at an accredited university/college in good standing. Students who will be graduating before the internship begins are not eligible.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on 4.0 scale is desirable.
  • Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 45 credit hours.
  • Pursuing a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management, Natural Resources, Biology, or related field.  
  • Coursework in Icthyology and Fisheries Techniques, or experience with fish identification preferred. 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds preferred.
