Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources,  Division of Environmental Quality,  and will be located at 2040 West Woodland,  Springfield,  MO 65807.

Why you’ll love this position:

You will be assisting the Southwest Regional Office Water Pollution Section with obtaining and analyzing data to determine the most efficient methods for regulated facilities to achieve effluent limits for Total Phosphorus.   Wastewater treatment facilities are given specific effluent limits in their Missouri State Operating Permits as a means to manage the quality of their discharge into waters of the state.   Several of these facilities experience compliance issues due to the “trial and error”  method of determining chemical dosage rates,  as well as differences in facility setup and components.   This study will compare different setups,  dosage rates,  and other pertinent factors,  and result in recommendations that can be given to these regulated entities to achieve the best possible result for Total Phosphorus with their available technology.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to regulated entities and collect effluent samples for laboratory analysis
  • Compile analyses into statistical data for presentation
  • Draft a report explaining your methods,  results,  and recommendations
  • Assist Department staff on inspections and investigations (air pollution,  solid and hazardous waste,  drinking water,  storm water,  and wastewater)
  • Attend professional meetings and assist Department staff with various other operations

Qualifications

  • Degree in (or seeking)  biology,  chemistry,  environmental protection or similar related fields
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with regulated entities and team members
  • Ability to traverse uneven,  rough or difficult terrain
  • Ability to travel,  operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid operator’s license
  • Ability to work in the field in a variety of weather conditions
