Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources,  Division of Environmental Quality,  and will be located at 2710 W.  Main St.,  Jefferson City,  MO 65109.

You will be joining the Water Quality Monitoring team to spend the summer learning from water quality professionals and conducting an independent field study.  You will collect data that will contribute to developing water quality standards that will protect Missouri wetlands in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Shadow and interact with water quality professionals on a day-to-day basis.
  • Collect water quality samples from approximately 25 wetlands in northern Missouri.
  • Collect field measurements for pH,  conductivity,  dissolved oxygen,  temperature,  and turbidity.
  • Compile field notes and analytical reports for all samples collected during the summer.
  • Learn about the use and maintenance of a variety of field and laboratory instruments.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing or having completed a science related degree,  and the desire to pursue a career in environmental science and natural resources.
  • Able to perform field work.  This includes working in and around water,  walking long distances while carrying equipment,  and working in extreme weather conditions.
  • Be comfortable conducting independent field work in remote locations.  (A training period will occur before being released to conduct the assigned study.)
  • Have a current,  valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Previous field experience is a benefit,  but is not required.
  • Work location is based in Jefferson City,  MO.  Intern must live within a reasonable driving distance or be able to arrange for housing in the vicinity during the duration of the assignment.
  • Be available to work extended hours and/or travel overnight.
  • Ability to initially cover meal expenses while in the field.  Expenses will be reimbursed.
