This industry is primarily centered on the extraction of naturally occurring minerals in the forms of solid (e.g., coal and ore), liquid (e.g., crude petroleum) and gas (e.g., natural gas). It includes quarrying, well operations, beneficiating (e.g., crushing, screening, washing and floatation), as well as other activities performed at the mine site.

Distinguished within the mining industry are 2 sectors: mine operation and mining support activities. The operation sector includes establishments operating mines, quarries, and oil and gas wells. The support sector includes establishments which services to the operation, such as exploration. This does not include geophysical surveying. Examples include:
